A Note From Mary Byers, CAE

29 Apr 2013 / 0 Comments / in News & Announcements/by alix

The Technology Imperative
Earlier this month, my co-author, Harrison Coerver, and I took our own advice. Since we believe embracing technology is essential for the future, we created an alliance with CommPartners to produce a live, online book launch in the form of a webinar and online learning modules designed to introduce the concepts in Road to Relevance: 5 Strategies for Competitive Associations . This was new territory for us but reinforces something we’ve been telling associations: technology is powerful and shouldn’t be ignored.

As you consider the technology imperative for your association, the following three tips may be helpful:

Find the expertise you need. Any time you enter new territory it’s a good idea to have a guide with you. Ours was CommPartners. We met at an ASAE meeting two years ago. When we began asking, “What if?” we decided to call someone who knew what they were doing. We learned much about what’s possible for a hybrid event (which combines a live audience with an online one) and are grateful to have had such knowledgeable guides.

Be willing to get out of your comfort zone — but stay with your strengths when you do so. I’ll admit it: though Harrison and I speak frequently, we’d never done something like this. Doing so meant getting out of our comfort zones. Now that we’ve done it, it feels good to know we have a new skill set as a result. Your association can benefit the same way when you take a risk as well. But remember: risks are smaller and the potential for a high return on investment is greatest when you operate within your strengths.

Walk before you run. Another way to ensure success is to work in phases. It can be overwhelming to tackle or introduce a large initiative all at once. Take a lesson from for-profit companies and do a limited roll out, test market or phased introduction. What you learn at each step will be helpful for the next.

Over 700 people registered for our live webinar and we had people watching from Japan, Belgium and France. That’s the power of technology! How can you adapt it for your association? (If you missed the webinar and are interested in watching it on-demand, click here. I suggest watching it just to observe the format. We had an emcee for a pre- and post-show, an idea that’s easily adaptable for your association’s online events!)

Sincerely,

Mary Byers, CAE

Complimentary Webcast: Road to Relevance

20 Mar 2013 / 1 Comment / in News & Announcements/by alix

On Tuesday, April 16th, live from the National Association of Manufacturers headquarters in Washington DC, industry icons and best-selling authors, Mary Byers and Harrison Coerver partnered with CommPartners to bring you a live video webcast based on their new book – Road to Relevance: 5 Strategies for Competitive Associations.

Mary and Harison looked at how competition is threatening the relevance of associations and what you can do in response. They led a hot-topic conversation that included practical advice and compelling case studies. Plus, participants got a peek at the proven strategies that have transformed associations and learned how they can implement them within their own organization.

Please stay tuned for access to the on-demand link of this webcast.

Special thanks to our host:

[Complimentary Wit & Wisdom Webinar]: ‘Enhance Your Online Education Strategy in 90 Days’

15 Feb 2013 / 2 Comments / in News & Announcements/by alix

Despite the prominence of professional development in both the organization’s mission statement and annual budget projections, this plan often does not drill down into the specifics of education strategy (and the chances it extends to online learning are shaky at best). Therefore, let’s think about education differently.

Join us on February 28th at 2pm ET as Event Garde’s President, Aaron Wolowiec, MSA, CAE, CMP, CTA shares a more intentional approach to meeting the unique needs of your stakeholders.

Key Takeaways:
  • Examine the major differences between a ‘strategic plan’ and an ‘education strategy’ and understand the benefits of leveraging both
  • Explore the ‘three steps’ of a successful online education strategy: relevant content curation, impactful marketing campaigns, and innovative instructional strategies
  • Analyze the ‘three steps’ in detail - Aaron will share eight concepts/recommendations for each step and then, as a group, we will collectively come up with an additional two
  • Collaborate with peers during facilitated breakout activities to share personal experiences and real-world scenarios
  • Construct a [customized] blueprint to enhance your education strategy (that you will complete by the end of the program)

Meet Our Partner – Learning Strategist, Aaron D. Wolowiec

Michigan native Aaron Wolowiec has more than a decade of experience in the meetings industry as a certified association executive, a certified meeting professional and a certified tourism ambassador. To learn more about Aaron, please click here.

Who Should Attend:
  • Professional development staff responsible for identifying content/coaching speakers
  • Marketing/Communications staff and meeting professionals responsible for promoting meetings/events
  • Senior staff responsible for supervising meeting/professional development functions
  • Association executives responsible for participating in strategic planning efforts

We are very excited to announce the recently established partnership between the Council of Manufacturing Associations and CommPartners. Kudos, Team CommPartners!

December 18, 2012 | A glimpse from my Tuesday afternoon…

I had just returned from lunch when our president approached me and recommended we send an electronic holiday card [that same day] to all of our members. Great idea! I knew our community would appreciate some holiday cheer from their colleagues at NSPE!

Uh oh…unfortunately, my excitement didn’t last long; in fact, it quickly turned to panic when I realized that I was responsible for this unexpected project.

Crisis! We were currently between graphic designers and I, the membership director, have no design skills or software access. What was I to do?!

I briefly looked at paperlesspost.com… coins…? I need to upload a logo…? Help? Confused…

CommPartners to the RESCUE! After taking a quick breather, I remembered that we use Real Magnet – CommPartners’ reliable e-broadcasting system. Without wasting a second, I logged into our account and was amazed at what I saw…a generous assortment of pre-created templates! Winter themed, check! I Love it! Religiously neutral? Yes, please.

Bam…in less than thirty minutes after receiving the request, it was done. Real Magnet made me look brilliant. In hindsight, I probably should have taken a tiny bit longer to complete this card because now the bar will always be set so high ;-)

Team CommPartners, thank you to all, for everything that you do. Web events, e-marketing, e-newsletters, whatever it is, I always know we can count on CommPartners for a successful solution. I have been relying on you throughout my entire association career (since 1995), and it has been a positive experience (and outcome) each time.

Cheers to a long-lasting partnership!

It’s the Season of Giving!

12 Dec 2012 / 0 Comments / in News & Announcements, Potluck, Social Learning, SocialFish/by ldreyer

Post image for It’s the Season of Giving!

It’s the Season of Giving, and here at CommPartners, we want to give you the inside scoop on some of our favorite things about the holiday season. I went around the office and asked some of the staff: “What do you enjoy most about the holidays?”

Here is what they had to say:

Patti, Administrative Specialist: I love visiting my family in Chesapeake, Virginia. The kids love to play board games while we sit around and play cards.

Tracy, Client Development: Baking Christmas cookies with my niece and nephew is my favorite thing to do. We make tons of different cookies and end up with flower all over ourselves by the end of the day.

Vickie, Director of Client Services: Spending time with my children and grandchildren. There is nothing like watching them open all of their gifts on Christmas morning!

Meghan, Director of Sales and Client Development: I’m a Christmas Elf. Picture the movie “Elf” and put my name on it. I love having holiday parties and decorating the entire house.

Terry, Supervisor, Client Services: The non-stop Christmas movies and music never gets old!

Rita, Billing Specialist: There are free Christmas plays at the church that I attend. I love watching them perform and seeing them modernize the old stories.

Alix, Marketing Manager: Hampden Christmas Lights in Baltimore! The entire 34th street is covered in lights and everyone is outside of their house watching people come by to look at their decorations and give out hot chocolate. It’s so much fun.

Tim, Creative Director: My wife and I travel to New Jersey to spend Christmas with my family and a few days after the holiday with her family. It’s always a good time eating and opening gifts together.

Chris, Vice President, Business Development: There is nothing better than having the chance to relax and spend time with family and friends.

Rich, President: The family traditions are great. Going out to see a movie with the family and eating Chinese food is always special. Being able to relax with my family is one of my favorite things to do.

Now it’s your turn! Tweet us on Twitter, ”Like” us on Facebook, or Connect with us on LinkedIn and share some of your favorite holiday activities and traditions! We look forward to hearing from you, and wish you all a Happy Holiday and a great New Year!
